After water damage, your main focus should be on safety:
- Is it safe to stay indoors?
- Electrical hazards and the risk of slips and falls are among the most common problems.
- Only engage in activities that are safe for you.
- Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful.

What you should do after a flood?
- Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
- Wipe excess water from wooden furniture after removing lamps and tabletops.
- Remove and prop up wet upholstery and cushions.
- Place aluminum foil or wooden blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
- Turn on the air conditioner to optimize drying in summer.
- Remove colored rugs from the wet carpet.
- Move art supplies to a safe, dry place.
- Pick up loose items from the floor.
What NOT to do after a flood?
- Do not leave wet fabrics lying around. Hang up furs and leather goods.
- Do not leave books, magazines or other colored items on the wet carpet or floor.
- Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water.
- Do not use a television or other household appliances.
- Do not turn on ceiling lights when the ceiling is wet and do not stay in rooms where the ceiling is sagging.
